HOLD ON A MOMENT… Did Oprah Just Pass the Daytime Talk Show Baton to Sherri Shepherd?
Considering the succession of talk shows like Wendy Williams that emerged after Oprah left the scene, one wonders why the Queen of Talk didn’t make such a move earlier.
It’s a rare occurrence to witness Oprah Winfrey gracing the screens of morning or midday talk shows. However, when Oprah made an appearance of “The Sherri Show”, as she continued her press tour for the upcoming musical adaptation of “The Color Purple,” it lead to one of the most influential moments of 2023 and we dare say 2024.
During her visit, Oprah not only engaged in discussions about all things purple but also bestowed a significant honor upon Sherri and her eponymous talk show. In a moment that elicited cheers and applause from the audience, Oprah officially handed over the daytime talk show baton to Sherri. When questioned about her legacy and its personal significance, the iconic talk show host shared her insights:
“When I came back from opening my school in South Africa and I said to Maya [Angelou], ‘Maya,’ I said, ‘the school is going to be my greatest legacy. Those girls are everything.’ And she said, ‘You have no idea. You have no idea what your legacy is going to be.’ Because she said, ‘Your legacy is never one thing. It’s every life you touch.’
And I pass that on to you …what Maya said to me that day…it’s every audience member who ever came and wherever they came from and they sat in that audience and they had an experience and they went home.
Oprah continued, “And they decided I’m going to do better. I’m going to get a better job. I’m going to leave my raggedy husband. I’m going to do whatever I need to do. So it’s every life you touch. So it’s not one thing. For me to be able to see you, to sit in the seat of your life on your own show with your name on it. It is the passing on.”
Sherri then asked, “So you’re officially passing the baton?” To which Oprah responded: “I’m passing the baton.”
Sherri is one of our FAVORITE people on the planet and we are excited for this monumental and well deserved moment. We’ve watched her career blossom and grown for decades through The View, various movies, and specials. Her track record of great guests and consistent viewership (especially with this only being her second season) – speaks volumes. We must say add that the owner of Icon Genius Media, Kellie Kelly, knew from the very beginning that Sherri would be number because she gives us something that we have longed for since Oprah ended, warmth, humor, and the ability to articulate eloquently and humorously what’s really going on in the world in a way that doesn’t depress us and keeps us moving forward. Sherri willingly shares the platform with others to share the good that’s going on in the world. Congratulations to Sherri, may her reign as the new Queen of Daytime Television be long and prosperous.
